Ancient Plumbers

clock June 25, 2014 03:19 by author Chris Vigna

Does Plumbing Seem Like a Thing of the Past?

When then ancient civilizations invented indoor plumbing, it was only intended to and to bring in clean water through the piping system; However, now our society is incredibly dependent on this system of complex pipes that makes our lives more sanitary and easy.

Unique networks of subterranean tunnels have been discovered all over the world and some date back to a period before Christ, which is truly incredible and might change some of the things that we first believed about our ancestors.  It is truly amazing to see how advanced they were back then and how they knew the importance of plumbing systems in their communities.

Civilizations like the Mayans and the Romans, all knew about the importance of plumbing and how it could affect their population’s health.  They developed incredible plumbing systems, which served to take clean water into their cities and dirty water away from them.  These systems are still standing today and could even work if water ran through them again.

Monarchs, during The Tudors period, also knew the importance of plumbing systems and many of their creations have helped modern plumbers to develop systems for our homes.  There are still documents, about the plumbers who worked in the city during those days and some of them were John Date and Nicholas Walrond, who was one of the most successful plumbers of his time.  Some of the records, not only show what parts of the city’s plumbing system each of these plumbers worked on, but also the foods that they were given by the city officials at the time. This proves how important plumbing systems were to our ancestors back then and how important they are to us today.

It is always nice to remember the great minds who gave us the future of plumbing. If it weren’t for them, who knows what our communities would be like and what our world would of have evolved to.

Plumbing Inspection Advice For Home Buyers

clock June 16, 2014 07:59 by author Chris Vigna

6 Things You Should Do Before Buying A House

Buying a new home is a very exciting and busy time where homebuyers can easily become overwhelmed with all there is to do before moving. However, it is extremely important to have the house inspected before purchasing to avoid any unpleasant surprises, especially when dealing with the plumbing system.

Below are six tips for inspecting a home’s plumbing system to insure best quality and no surprises down the road.

Plumbing Inspection Tips:

  • 1.       Try to find a home, which does not have problems with plumbing pipes freezing during winter.  This can be a serious problem and if a house does not have many vents, you will be better off!
  • 2.       Before buying a home, you should understand if sewage goes directly to the city’s sewer or if there is a septic tank nearby.  Knowing this can help you to keep things clean around your home and prevent you from flushing unnecessary objects down the drain.
  • 3.       It is important to check the bathroom and kitchen faucets, as well as every sink, shower and toilet for leaks or any other malfunctions.  Noticing these before you purchase your new home can help to make a wiser decision and save money as well.
  • 4.       Repairing a water heater is more expensive than getting a new one, so make sure that the one already installed is not too old and is working properly.
  • 5.       Be sure to check the water meter for an estimate of how much is used each month. This will give you an idea of how much money will be spent in monthly water bills.
  • 6.   Checking the home’s plumbing pipes for lead, which can be hazardous to our health, can save you future problems.

Remember these six easy steps before buying your new home!

Things That Plumbers Don’t Want You To Do

clock May 30, 2014 07:46 by author Chris Vigna

We have all flushed things down the toilet, which we know shouldn’t be flushed and sometimes, they have caused some serious plumbing issues in our homes. Not doing these things will help you prevent plumbing problems and it will also make your plumber’s work easier.

So here are some things you should be careful about:

·         Reaching for the Drano – Most people tend to go for chemicals and similar drain cleaning solutions when they experience a plumbing problem, but these may not always be the best choice.   Chemicals can be a hazard to your health and you may not have the proper equipment, so think twice before applying chemicals to your pipes.

·         Don’t use your toilets as trash cans – There are things that can be flushed down your toilet and there are things that can’t, so don’t treat your toilets as trash cans and you will not have as many plumbing problems throughout your life.  Even things like personal cleaning wipes, feminine hygiene products and toilet scrubbers, which are labeled as “flushable”, should not always be thrown into your toilets.

·         Trying to do everything on your own- making yourself believe that you can solve anything, does not always work and sometimes diagnosing plumbing problems on your own, is not your best decision.  Sometimes, you can even make things worse if you are not certain of what you are doing. So calling a professional plumber may be your best choice.

·         Know more about your plumbing system – If you are not familiar with your plumbing system at home, you should really find out things like where the main water valve is located and where the entire emergency shut off valves are as well.  This will allow you to shut off the water, if there are any problems and it will help you when the plumber gets there, as you will be able to guide them to these valves.

·         Don’t keep your old hoses – It is not uncommon for hoses to burst suddenly, so replacing your hoses every now and then can help you to prevent some plumbing problems as well.  Washing machines, dishwashers and other appliances, all have hoses, which can burst at any moment, so check them regularly and you will avoid these problems.

·         Make sure you have a leak protection system – Having one of these systems installed in your home can really save you from some problems and it is one of the best things that you can add to protect your home.

·         Make sure your water heater is not outdated – Having an old water heater can cause more problems than you can imagine, so try and keep it up to date and you will also save yourself a lot of plumbing problems.

·         Don’t overload your garbage disposal - If you treat your garbage disposal kindly, it will also treat you kindly.  Just be careful with the things and how much you use your garbage disposal and you will keep this working better most of the time.

·         Don’t play with the water heater’s pressure valve – If you are not familiar with how your water heater’s pressure valve functions, you should really not mess with it.  This could just make things worse and make you spend more in plumbing repairs.

So remember these things and you will not have as many plumbing problems in your home.  You can also read some of our past blog posts and learn more about plumbing systems and protecting your own.

A Plumbing Job Makes The Record Books

clock May 17, 2014 03:30 by author Chris Vigna

You Won’t Believe This Plumbing Job!

Most homeowners worry about calling their plumbers because they fear what the bill is going to be, but the Canadian high Arctic region, has recently gone through probably the most expensive plumbing job in the world.   Even the military was involved in this project!

The job lasted for ten days and it was all done in a very frozen and dark part of the Arctic region.  The job required tough and laborious 10 meter drilling techniques and some submarine robots, had to be used to survey some of the damage and process below.

Apparently, the problem was a broken pump, which was finally replaced, after the 10 arduous days of work. The backup pump however, was not replaced, as the team of plumbers decided to wait for warmer temperatures.

The team had to be transported on Hercules planes, as this was the best way to reach the remote area.  These trips, reached a cost of around $85,000 alone, which is why this job became the most expensive job in the world, related to plumbing and repairing water pumps.

These types of plumbing jobs prove how far humankind has come and how useful technology has been, towards helping us reach places that people did not use to roam in before.  Jobs like this one also make plumbing look like a more interesting industry and show how important these systems are for our communities.

Remember that at All About the Pipes, we are always ready to help you with your plumbing needs and will recommend the best plumbing system for your home. If you want to know more about water pumps and what they can do for you, take a look at our hot water recirculation pump article, so you can learn if one of these is right for you.

Plumbing- With a Feminine Touch

clock March 31, 2014 09:21 by author Chris Vigna

Survey Results Prove Girls Should Become Plumbers

Some campaigns are now being launched in order to encourage girls to become plumbers. Some surveys have proved that many people would rather have a woman working in their house, than a man.

WaterSafe, recently conducted a poll of 2000 consumers and their results showed that at least two out of five North West homeowners would rather have a female plumber going into their home instead of a male plumber.

Around 50% of the people, who participated in the poll stated that they would feel a lot safer with a woman doing their plumbing jobs and that they would not be patronized by them.  Although this survey proved that many people would rather have a female plumber, than a male plumber, the poll also proved that homeowners are more interested in the plumber’s experience, than in their sex.

At least two thirds of the people who participated in this poll also believe that although plumbing is more of a man’s job, they would like to see more women in this industry and that they know that they would also provide high quality services.

At least one third of the women who were interviewed stated that if they had the chance, they would think about getting involved in the plumbing industry and that it sounded like an interesting thing for them to do.  This was certainly something unexpected, as not many people would imagine that some women are interested in becoming plumbers.

Around a quarter of the women interviewed in this poll, stated that they would prefer a job in a typical female industry, like teaching, office based jobs and health jobs.  It is obvious that more women are becoming involved in those industries, which were thought for men only in the past.

Not only are some women doing an excellent job in these industries, but some have already surpassed some men and are creating even more opportunities for women around the world.  Hopefully, more women will join the plumbing industry in the near future, so they can help homeowners and help this industry to grow as well.

World Plumbing Day

clock March 15, 2014 17:24 by author Chris Vigna

March 11th was World Plumbing Day

The World’s Plumbing Day was just this last Tuesday and as it does every year, it helped to raise awareness about the importance of good quality plumbing systems and what plumbers do to contribute to our communities.  World Plumbing Day was established by the United Nations and in 2014 they focused on how plumbing is an essential part of our health.

Plumbing is a profession of extreme importance to our society and although not many people are interested in it or want to work as a plumber, it really does impact the entire world.  Not knowing much about plumbing and how these systems work can lead to some bad management in some households and thus affect an entire community.  This is one of the main reasons the United Nations wanted to create World Plumbing Day to help raise awareness about the importance of these systems in our homes.

Water treatment, water supply, drainage and sanitation systems, sewage treatment, flood management, ventilation systems, water heating and sewage recycling are all encompassed in the plumbing profession.  There are also many other things involved in the plumbing industry, which is why it is so important for all of us.  A day like this one is meant to help the general public to learn more about plumbing systems, how to follow some safety measures and how not to affect the systems in any way.

At All About the Pipes, we focus on working with the latest plumbing technologies and always deliver a high quality job to our clients.  We worry about human health and want to promote the World Plumbing Day, as it will help communities all over the world to learn more about the plumbing industry and the services that are offered by professional plumbers like us.

New Trick To Clean Your Drains

clock February 23, 2014 08:43 by author Chris Vigna

Some people do not know about the benefits of using vinegar and baking soda together to clean some parts of your home, but the fact is that this combination can really help to clean your home’s drains.

There are some apartments and homes, which require constant drain inspection and cleaning to prevent flooding and other plumbing emergencies, yet sometimes it may be difficult for some of us to do this.  By simply using some baking soda and vinegar, you could prevent your drains from clogging, thus saving you from a lot of problems.

Vinegar and baking soda are also an eco-friendly way to clean your drains.  Using this combination to clean your drains does not require any elbow grease or a plumber, as they are very easy to apply and they do most of the work on their own.

To prepare the mixture, first pour a bowl of hot water, down the drain that is giving you problems or that you want to clean.  You will then need to dump around ½ c. of baking soda into the drain and let it sit with the hot water for a few minutes.

After a little while, pour in a mixture of 1 c. vinegar, with 1 c. of very hot water and let it sit over the baking soda for a few minutes too.  Using a drain plug to cover the reaction that this mixture will create will prevent you from having to clean up a mess.  After leaving the mixture to sit for around five minutes, you should flush or turn on the water, so that the mixture is flushed and your drains are cleaned.

Hot water and baking soda help to loosen up some of the grimy sludge, which can be found at the bottom of your drains.  When the vinegar is added, an explosion occurs and this causes the sludge to be jolted right off your drains.

While this is an excellent technique for keeping your drains cleaned and unclogged, it does not work all of the time and this is when you should consider giving All About the Pipes a call.  We are drain cleaning experts and also specialize in solving any type of plumbing emergency.

You can read our previous blog posts and find out more useful plumbing tips for you to apply in your home and to learn more about what we do at All About the Pipes!

Find An Honest Plumber

clock October 22, 2013 02:42 by author Chris Vigna

Honesty Is Of Extreme Importance

Today, there are plenty of plumbers out there, who will not be very honest with you and not provide the services that you need, when you hire them.  It is really sad to read, about people being scammed, by so called “plumbers”, who really have no idea what they are doing and only over charge you every time.

Many families are vulnerable to these kinds of plumbers, as not everyone is very informed about how their plumbing systems should work and this is why contacting plumbers with good reputation, is the best thing that you can do.

Now, there are many websites, television shows and other professionals, who can help you to hire the perfect plumber for your home and this is certainly useful, as you can easily identify who are the plumbers who only want to steal your money and who are the ones that will provide a professional service for you.

There are also some services, which will predict how long a plumber should take on your project and even provide you, with a list of things that you should be getting ready. Some of these services will also help you to establish the right price to pay your plumber, which is certainly very helpful, as not many of us know, how much plumbers are charging these days.

Some of the plumbers that you should be careful of, are those who want to overcharge you for their services and who give you a long expectancy to finish their job. You should also, ask about what type of equipment and parts, they will be using to install your home’s plumbing system, as there are many unprofessional plumbers, who do not own the right equipment and who will purchase lower quality accessories, in order to earn more money themselves.

“It’s things like this which gives the industry a bad name. I have to say I hate people like this with a passion. Not only are they giving decent honest plumbers like me and my staff a poor reputation, but they are vile and horrible human beings”, stated Chris Shave, who is part of a professional plumbers company.

Hiring the right plumber is the first step, towards having an excellent plumbing system in your home and there are many ways to find out, if you are talking to a reliable plumber or not.  Be aware, that there are many people trying to do evil out there and that you should always be careful, who you are dealing with.

Finding good quality work from plumbers is not hard today and this is why, you should contact All About the Pipes, as we will never do anything to harm our clients.  We want to help you have the best plumbing system in your home and we have some of the best professional plumbers in our team.    We will always recommend what’s best for you and we will always use the latest technology and quality equipment, to set up your home’s plumbing system.
